Chiropractic Care Prevents Chronic Low Back Pain

Chiropractor in Chapel Hill, NC

The peer-reviewed medical journal Spine in April 2011 published a double-blind study that found chiropractic care to be the best treatment for alleviating and preventing future episodes of low back pain. While chiropractors do not only treat low back pain, this study demonstrated the benefits of active and maintenance care for back pain.  A significant percentage of doctor office visits annually are for low back pain, and back pain is a leading cause of disability, as well. At our office, chiropractic care can help relieve the acute problem and help prevent recurrence for many safely and effectively.

In April 2011, peer-reviewed medical journal Spine published an article entitled `Does Maintained Spinal Manipulative Therapy for Chronic Non-specific Low Back Pain Result in Better Long-Term Outcomes?’. Traditional treatments such as medication and rest do not create the outcomes many patients desire; 10% of them suffer disability from the disorder.  At Acupractic Natural Healing Center, Dr. Oskardmay is aware of these troubling statistics. As a licensed chiropractic physician with over twenty-five years of clinical experience, she has helped thousands of patients. She understands the causes of low back pain. She uses hands-on, or Activator assisted spinal mobilization and soft tissue massage in helping get patients well now and into the future.

The Spine article listed above points out that chiropractic adjustment decreases pain and disability in the short term, helping prevent future episodes of back pain. The reasons why chiropractic is so effective are many, and Dr. Oskardmay can explain these to you when you come in for care. Each patient is unique, and the spinal mobilization procedures take into account each person’s individual needs. The article reminds us that acute back pain is more likely to respond to any care, suggesting that `chiropractic first` is a decent message.

The article points out that the way the chiropractic adjustment works is multifold. It disrupts articular adhesions, and it improves trunk mobility. Additionally, the adjustment relaxes hypertonic muscles by sudden stretching, and releases entrapped synovial folds.  Vertebral mobilization creates attenuation of alpha motor neuron activity and enhancement of proprioceptive behavior. Importantly, it stimulates the release of beta-endorphins.

Dr. Oskardmay understands these significant findings that allow her to enhance the pain-free vertebral range of motion, overall body balance, and nerve transmission to vital organs and muscles. Additionally, back pain treatment at our office helps people feel better and gives them confidence in their strength and performance. Many drugs and surgical procedures do precisely the opposite.

At Acupractic Natural Healing, the acupuncturist and chiropractor in Chapel Hill, NC, we have helped many people reduce their back pain naturally, safely, and effectively. If you have tried other treatment methods and haven’t gotten the results you desire, call, or email today to learn how today’s chiropractic can help you or a loved one return to health. We participate with most major insurance plans and look forward to helping you today!

Using Natural Products in Our Homes to Create Relaxation and Healing

Chiropractor in Chapel Hill, NC

Nature heals. The conclusion of many types of mental health practitioners is to increasingly recommend outdoor time in nature over medications to relieve stress and anxiety.  Stress and anxiety are significant culprits in many ailments- pain is worse with increases in either of these two troublesome conditions. At our chiropractic and acupuncture office here in Chapel Hill, NC, we incorporate natural themes throughout the facility to relax the mind and body. Dr. Oskardmay makes helpful suggestions to help you incorporate nature in your life, as well. Our goal to help you feel better naturally.

Chiropractic and acupuncture are natural health alternatives- they provide nature-based options to traditional medications and drug therapies. These hands-on therapies have fewer adverse side effects and provide practical, lasting relief for many conditions.  Dr. Oskardmay depends on skilled palpation and observation of the patient and thorough patient history evaluation to diagnose wherever possible.

Chiropractic perceives the flow of nerve energy through spinal subluxations- rocky impediments and teetering blockages that deprive downstream muscles, organs, and other tissues of nourishing energy. Dr. Oskardmay removes obstacles to healing via the chiropractic manual adjustment to restore nerve flow. As an acupuncturist and chiropractor in Chapel Hills, NC she uses massage techniques to relax and smooth taut muscles to relax the body-mind, reduce sympathetic flight-of-flight overload, and restore natural health.

Acupuncture treatment has many connections with nature, as well. Yin and yang are essential concepts that, generally, relate to the balance of all energies -hot and cold, fast and slow, hard and soft. Channels or meridians recognized by Chinese medicine acupuncture are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The balance and movement of corresponding energies along the meridians reflect regions of imbalance and stagnation, disease, and impairment. Being in nature builds yin, which reduces stress and strengthens the relaxation response. Dr. Oskardmay, like other acupuncturists, uses energetic channels to heal and incorporates natural themes to facilitate the process.

Beyond the outdoors, there are many local businesses with products that aid natural healing.  For instance, Weaver Street Market is a local Food Cooperative with organic foods and herbal remedies and ointments. Fleet Feet Active Feet in Carrboro is a local store that provides client foot evaluation for the best activewear shoe to enhance the outdoor experience. On a smaller scale, Carolina Cairn Company on Etsy sells handmade rock sculptures and other objects to incite relaxation and balance.

Wherever there is natural relaxation, there is a chance for healing. Choose your favorite natural respite to take the edge off; your mind and body will benefit. Call or email our chiropractic and acupuncture offices in Eastowne Hills of Chapel Hill for more information. Call Acupractic today.

Understanding How Chiropractic Care Works

Chiropractor

Chiropractic care from an experienced chiropractor, like from Mid-Atlantic Spinal Rehab & Chiropractic, can benefit a number of people for a variety of problems. From back and neck pain to poor posture, chiropractic focuses on creating uninterrupted pathways between joints. It can help build up the immune system and improve everyday functioning, including mood and attitude, but there are many things it cannot do. Here is how chiropractic care works and what it is specifically for.

Types of Chiropractic Care

Most patients will encounter chiropractic adjustments when they see a chiropractor. Adjustments are movements and pressure applied to joints that are misaligned or causing pain. Spinal manipulation is the most common form of adjustment, which involves thrusting movements to pop vertebrae back into proper alignment. Other types of care include heat and cold applications, massages, diet changes and exercises.

Problems Treated by Chiropractic Care

While chiropractors generally work with the spine and back to relieve pain, other areas of the body can benefit from treatments, such as:

  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Knee pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Hip pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Whiplash, or other problems following an accident
  • Joint immobility

These are all pain-related issues that can be targeted by a chiropractor and gradually worked out over time. Many patients continue seeing a chiropractor after their first visit since results improve over multiple appointments.

Other Problems

In addition to direct pain, chiropractic care has been proven to improve overall health by boosting the immune and nervous systems. Children who see a chiropractor often experience improved moods and attitudes and get a better night’s sleep.

Safety Concerns

Many people wonder whether chiropractic care is safe, and multiple studies have been carried out to see how it compares to other medical treatments. The good news is that chiropractic is one of the lowest-risk treatments available for severe pain. This may appeal to patients who are not yet ready to go onto medications or undergo major surgeries to correct an issue. Best of all, chiropractic care is not something you must continue to receive for the rest of your life once you’ve started. If you see excellent results after a certain time, chiropractic care may no longer be needed; but you can return to it if old pain arises again.

If you think a chiropractor might be able to help with your pain, make a consultation appointment to discuss your situation, or ask your doctor. Getting a better understanding of chiropractic can help you make an informed decision on how to best address your pain.

Chiropractic Care for Shoulder and Neck Pain and Sixth Cervical Nerve

Chiropractor Chapel Hill, NC

At Acupractic Natural Healing Center, the chiropractic and acupuncture offices of Dr. Lisa Oskardmay, we heal shoulder and neck pain at its source. A trained chiropractic physician with over 25 years of clinical experience, Dr. Oskardmay has helped thousands of Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh residents reduce neck and shoulder pain naturally, without drugs and surgery. We do this as we focus care on the source of the problem. The spine surrounds and protects the spinal cord. When the vertebral column is misaligned and inflamed, the neck and back and distal innervated areas suffer. The shoulder and neck frequently experience pain together because of this connection.

There are seven spinal segments in the neck and eight cervical nerves. The following discussion relates to the sixth nerve that arises from just above the sixth vertebra. Damage and irritation of this region affect many people. The sixth nerve arising from the lower part of the cervical spine sends nerve input to several vital areas, especially the rotator cuff muscles and muscles of the distal arm. Damage of the sixth cervical nerve from spine subluxation can result in nerve impingement. Subluxation will affect the upper trunk of the brachial plexus, a bundle of nerves coming from the lower neck to the shoulder, arms, and hands. The sixth cervical spinal nerve contributes fibers to peripheral nerves, including the long thoracic nerve, the medial and lateral pectoral nerves, the upper and lower scapular nerves, thoracodorsal nerve, medial cutaneous nerve, axillary nerve, and others.

Many people suffer from an impingement of this vital cervical spinal nerve segment due to its position in the delicate neck and overbending or twisting. Dr. Oskardmay understands the cause and implications of neck pain and is able to help with a combination of chiropractic adjustments, massage, and acupuncture.

Irritation of the sixth cervical spinal nerve can affect the function of muscles innervated by the segment via the aforementioned peripheral nerves. For instance, the rotator cuff muscle teres minor allows external rotation of the shoulder, such as throwing a baseball.  The triceps muscle enables us to straighten the arm and extend it backward, such as reaching the car’s back seat. The deltoid muscle is involved in flexion of the shoulder joint and rotating the shoulder inward as in reaching overhead or forward. Loss of any of these motions can indicate irritation of the sixth cervical spinal nerve. Be sure to tell Dr. Oskardmay about any loss of muscle strength as this can mean a level of spinal misalignment she can help fix.

Spinal misalignment and subluxation occur from many causes- spinal injury, overuse, twisting too quickly, sitting in a bent posture, sleep postures, to name a few. Pain in the neck and back at the level of subluxation frequently associates with misalignment, although not always. Additionally, there may be altered sensation- pins and needles, numbness, aches, even sharp pain, along the dermatome and other aspects of the distribution of the affected nerve root. The sensory delivery of the sixth cervical spinal nerve root is the anterior shoulder; many people with irritation of the sixth cervical vertebra level experience altered sensation in that region, though not always. Also, pain stemming from the shoulder joint itself transmits via the sixth cervical nerve root.

Trained in hands-on spinal mobilization and the Activator Technique, she puts your spinal health first and can help reduce pain caused by the spinal disorder and other problems. Acupuncture Treatment for Sleep Trouble at the offices of Dr. Oskardmay

Acupuncture Chapel Hill, NC

Insomnia plagues numerous people from all walks of life. The cause of sleep trouble varies from

individual to individual, but the result is the same- lack of restorative sleep. Shut-eye deprivation has far-reaching implications and causes serious health issues. Acupuncture treatment at Acupractic Natural Healing Center helps because it supports the balance of yin and yang- the two vital energies that co-exist in each person. Yin is the body’s evening energy system, and yang is more energetic during the daylight hours. When yin and yang are in balance, a person can function during the day and rest at night. Acupuncture helps restore beneficial sleep because acupuncturists balance yin and yang by using ancient methods of acupuncture Chapel Hill, NC locals recommend.

Dr. Oskardmay is a licensed healthcare professional who treats insomnia and other sleep concerns, as well as pain and other conditions. Using small sterile acupuncture filaments or massage, she stimulates meridian channel flow and releases blockages to the body’s energy flow. Qi flow is body energy that appears to each of us as blood flow, nerve conductivity, digestive movements, and others. Every aspect of our being has qi flow, and Dr. Oskardmay understands and uses this ancient knowledge to heal people on many levels, including sleep. Treatment is gentle and pain-free, and soothes the mind.

The average person needs between 7 and 9 hours of restful sleep a night to function. About 65% of us get that amount; however, the rest function on less. In the short term, insomnia causes a lack of mental clarity and confusion during the day and decreased body strength and physical performance. Chinese Medicine and acupuncture recognize the essential nature of sleep, and Dr. Oskardmay strives to help people achieve adequate sleep without drugs or other medications. Over time, the lack of healthy sleep contributes to severe health conditions, including obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Adequate restful sleep is crucial to our well being.

By restoring normal healthy yin and yang balance, acupuncture treatment at our office supports sound sleep. Yin and yang relate to the autonomic nervous system- the neuronal network in each person that controls automatic responses to everything internal and external. Yin refers to the parasympathetic nervous system’s role in our body- sleep, digestion, relaxation, and healing. The body will allow these parasympathetic actions when there is adequate yin energy. Alternately, yang relates to the sympathetic nervous system, which corresponds to fight-or-flight activities that take power away from sleep and other aspects: stress and extreme exercise cause yang to rise and the sympathetic nervous system to assume control. Acupuncturists can help patients understand the vital connection of yin and yang inside each of us and how to make changes that improve the needed balance to improve sleep and other actions.

In addition to providing acupuncture and massage treatment in the office, Dr. Oskardmay helps patients understand how to achieve better sleep control at home. For instance, to enhance yin, one must support sleepfulness and relaxation. This might include shutting off lights at night, avoiding overstimulating the senses in the evening such as imposed by television news or the like, and not overeating in the evening. Additionally, it is vital to building yin by establishing regular healthy habits because this reduces stress. Normal healthy habits include going to bed and awakening at approximately the same time each day, striving to get 7-8 hours of restful sleep a night, and avoiding overstimulation, especially in the evenings.

Stress and Shoulder Pain Relief With Acupuncture

Shoulder Pain Doctor Chapel Hill, NC

Acupuncture is a type of healthcare that recognizes the connection between the body and the mind. Stress uniquely affects each person; nonetheless, many people experience tightness in their shoulders when they are under pressure. Treatment for stress and shoulder pain and tightness by a licensed acupuncturist benefits the channels that course the shoulder region. Therapy of the channel, also known as meridian or energetic pathway, helps the shoulder as well as similar emotional concerns. Acupuncturists treatment with acupuncture needles, meridian massage, and auriculotherapy provide needed relief.

Energetic pathways passing through the shoulder include the wood channel, the metal channel, and the fire channel. The wood channel relates to the emotions of anger and frustration; the flip side of these sentiments is creativity. Areas of the shoulder connected with the wood element are the top of the shoulder and the neck. Persons experiencing stress related to frustration and anger or blocked creativity who also experience pain and tightness in the upper shoulder region will benefit from acupuncture to these regions.

The anterior aspect of the shoulder and the emotion of grief relates to the metal element or channel. Other features include inspiration and letting go. Persons who experience stress as a lack of motivation and feeling that they can’t let go of an issue, as well as pain or tightness in the anterior aspect of the shoulder, will find acupuncture treatment to the metal channel beneficial.

The fire meridian or channel relates to the posterior portion of the shoulder. Muscle aches and pain and fatigue of this area suggest irritation of the fire element. The fire element’s emotional aspects are bitterness and joy; persons who experience stress with bitterness and lack of joy will find some relief with Chinese medicine and acupuncture to the fire channel.

Acupuncture intake and evaluation rely on criteria somewhat different than western medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis involves asking questions about where pain exists as well as about mood and mental concerns. Other aspects include the evaluation of tongue and pulse because these critical diagnostic criteria reveal a lot about the patient. Other issues revolve around organ function. Be sure to fill out the necessary paperwork and intake forms as completely as possible because answers provide the information your acupuncturist needs to provide accurate and beneficial diagnosis and treatment. Answer any questions your acupuncturist inquires to the best of your ability to enable them to know you better. Acupuncture relies on channel theory to heal the patient, and your participation helps practitioners understand where the imbalance lies and how to treat problems effectively.

Stress frequently accompanies aches and pain in the shoulders or other body regions. Your acupuncturist can help you understand what causes the problem and how to reduce anxiety and stress better. Using small sterile acupuncture needles, acupuncturists unblock areas of stagnation and blocked qi flow. This relatively painless, relaxing treatment benefits the body and mind. Many acupuncturists also incorporate massage such as gua sha and cupping to restore balance further, reduce tight muscles and trigger points.

Acupuncture is an enjoyable, beneficial treatment that has helped millions worldwide reduce stress and pain. How Chiropractors Adjust Patients Differently

Chiropractor

No two people have the same bodies or physical challenges. Likewise, the way that health care professionals treat patients will vary from person to person. If you’re having back problems, you can turn to a chiropractor for relief. The chiropractor will use a technique called an adjustment to realign your spine and promote healing throughout your body. It’s helpful to understand how this process works.

What Is an Adjustment?

Going to the chiropractor is much more than have someone pop your back and send you on your way. An adjustment is a process where the chiropractor manipulates your spine to put it in the correct place. The chiropractor will have you lie on a table, either on your side or stomach. The doctor then places his or her hands on your back. Using sudden, controlled force, the chiropractor will adjust your spine. The frequency of these adjustment visits will depend on the severity of your issue and other health factors.

What Are the Benefits?

People of all types can see a chiropractor for an adjustment. The process not only helps relieve back pain but can reduce irritation and discomfort in the neck, shoulders, arms, legs, hands and feet. People with headaches and chronic migraines also get adjustments. These treatments can help a person have better flexibility, mobility and range of motion.

Customizing the Adjustments

Not all adjustments will look the same. The chiropractor will be mindful of unique situations that patients may have. For example, a pregnant patient will have different challenges and needs than other people. In these cases, the chiropractor may place a pillow or cushion under the patient. The doctor may also adjust the level of the table. Instead of lying on her stomach, the woman will lie on her side or sit in a chair. Younger, smaller patients will also require less pressure and force on the back from the adjustment. The chiropractor may also use a tool to manipulate the spine. Patients should keep in mind that any time they feel pain during the adjustment that they should inform the chiropractor. It is always best to share any concerns or ask questions before the adjustment takes place.

If your back or other joints are hurting, get help sooner than later. These pains can affect your quality of life. Luckily, relief is available through chiropractic adjustments, regardless of your age, body type or any other factors.

Chiropractic Care for Neck and Shoulder Pain Caused by Large Chest Size

Shoulder Pain Doctor Chapel Hill, NC

Neck and back pain caused by heavy breasts is a problem some women experience with little relief. Chiropractic care at Acupractic can help in several important ways. Lack of adequate bra support and balanced muscle tone contributes to the problem. Additionally,  the type of work many women perform every day- sitting at a computer or carrying children, promotes thoracic muscle tight weakness and painful trigger points such as between the shoulder blades. Here at Acupractic Natural Healing Center, Dr. Lisa Oskardmay DC, LAc. gets to the root of the problem by mobilizing vertebral subluxations, massaging tight muscles and restoring nerve flow. She provides exercise and nutrition advice, as well, to support healing between visits.

Large breasts and constrictive undergarments put a lot of pressure on the neck, back, and shoulder regions. Brassieres that focus weight on the shoulders compound the issue, and thin bra straps can cut into the joints. Sometimes women carry heavy purses, as well, which contributes to the problem. Our body musculature, the pectoralis muscles, naturally support the breast tissue and front of the body; these muscles attach at the ribcage and the lateral collarbone.  Excessive pressure on these muscles from large breasts and heavy purses draw the shoulders and neck forward, in effect rounding the shoulders. Compensatory tightness in the corresponding back muscles exists from the chronic pulling ahead of the shoulders and neck.  This pulling creates discomfort between the shoulder blades and pain in the neck and back. Dr. Oskardmay helps patients understand the connection between everyday habits and physical changes that contribute to pain.

The neck and back consist of vertebrae of increasing size top to bottom with intervening discs. The backbone surrounds and protects the vital spinal cord and the nerves that depart under each segment. Nerves carry crucial information to and from the central nervous system and the shoulders to hands in this area. When there is pressure on the vertebral column from tight muscles and ligaments or when bra straps cut into the shoulders, this impedes nerve flow. Proper diagnostics and effective treatment using gentle chiropractic adjustments help many women recover from the back, neck, and joint pain caused by postural distortion.

When a patient complains of neck pain and numb hands or pain in the elbow or shoulder, it is essential to identify the cause of the problem and treat it at its source. Frequently, the problem stems from the neck itself, worsened by the pressure imposed by heavy front carriage. As a licensed chiropractic physician, Dr. Oskardmay palpates, inspects each part of the back, and performs other diagnostic tests to determine its cause. Each spinal nerve affects a particular part of the neck, back, shoulder, into the hands. Pain and tenderness in the neck, accompanied by other specific signs and symptoms indicate where to apply the chiropractic adjustment most effectively. Dr. Oskardmay has helped many people with neck and back pain caused by nerve impingement and looks forward to assisting you. Chiropractic Care and the Fifth Cervical Spinal Nerve

Neck Pain Doctor In Chapel Hill, NC

Chiropractic physicians are neuromuscular specialists with emphasis on the spine and nerves. Dr. Oskardmay evaluates each patient’s spinal health as part of a regular treatment plan. She recognizes that each nerve arising from the neck and backbone has the potential to impact particular muscles and organs; each spinal vertebra also impacts posture and back pain. Using careful evaluate she determines where to perform treatment to relieve spinal subluxation and pain.

For instance, the nerve arising in the lower mid-neck region just above the fifth cervical vertebrae is called the fifth cervical spinal nerve. This nerve is part of several larger peripheral nerves that travel to muscles in the neck and shoulder. Misalignment or subluxation of the fifth cervical vertebra that puts pressure on this cervical spinal nerve can impede function of those muscles and cause changes in skin sensation related to the nerve. When you have neck pain or other symptoms such as shoulder irritation or headache, Dr. Lisa Oskardmay can help determine spinal level involvement and she can provide effective gentle treatment.

Peripheral nerves that receive input from the fifth cervical spinal nerve include the dorsal scapular nerve, the long thoracic nerve, the phrenic nerve, the upper trunk of the brachial plexus, and the musculocutaneous nerve. Muscles innervated by these nerves include: the middle scalene muscle that lifts the top ribs, the levator scapalue that elevates the shoulder blade, and the rhomboid muscles that hold the scapula toward the spine. Other muscles include the serratus anterior muscle which is a muscle that attaches the first eight ribs to the scapula, as well as the muscles on the anterior compartment of the arm that flex the arm such as the flexor carpi radialis and palmaris longus muscles, and that flex the wrist and fingers such as the flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles. Importantly, the fifth cervical spinal nerve also contributes fibers to the phrenic nerve, involved with breathing.

Irritation of the mid-neck in the region of the fifth cervical spinal nerve has the capacity to affect many areas as described. When there is irritation to the mid-neck either from injury or chronic degeneration, the spinal nerve suffers, and connected muscles and ligament suffer, as well. Patients may notice symptoms such as headache, shoulder bursitis, and imbalance, back muscle tightness, neck pain, arm and hand weakness or problems with the fingers. Dr. Oskardmay treats problem areas using a combination of supportive techniques.

Dr. Oskardmay adjusts spinal misalignment using chiropractic mobilization techniques. Well trained in hands-on spinal adjustments and Activator technique, she will improve vertebral position and stability. Additionally, massage helps to relax tight muscles; Dr. Oskardmay provides therapeutic massage and other beneficial therapies such as cupping and acupuncture as needed, as well, in order to bring balance back to the system.

The fifth cervical spinal nerve is just one of the spinal segments that benefit from chiropractic care.
