Chiropractic – Questions and Benefits
Chiropractic
Chiropractic healthcare has a long-established history in this country and throughout the world. One of the first branches of healing, before medicines and surgery became the norm, hands-on chiropractic healing has been used by millions around the world. Licensure for Chiropractic exists in every state and most countries. Chiropractors heal the body by using a spinal mobilization technique called an adjustment. Recognizing that body health stems from nervous system integrity, a chiropractic physician evaluates factors that affect the spine and works to correct problems therein.
Vertebral irritations, or subluxations, frequently cause pain and postural abnormalities, resulting in uneven nerve flow or blockage. Your chiropractor will perform a physical exam, including palpation, muscle testing, and other neurological examination techniques to detect subluxations. Using the spinal adjustment, chiropractors restore the normal vertebral position and nerve flow. Also called spinal mobilization or manipulation, they perform the chiropractic adjustment using hands-on or machine-applied pressure to the vertebral column where subluxations exist. The technique is a high-velocity, low-force procedure that cleanly repositions vertebrae and helps to reduce inflammation and other nerve irritants. Many Chiropractors also apply massage and other physical therapy modalities to reduce muscle spasms near the spine and in affected areas. They instruct their patients in exercises and provide home instruction to enhance treatment success.
Chiropractic care is a holistic treatment that aims to improve and maintain whole-body health for years. Chiropractic care has few adverse side effects because it does not depend on drugs or surgery, and people of all ages and disease states can use it.
Your Doctor
Dr. Lisa Oskardmay is a licensed chiropractic physician and licensed acupuncturist. Her early education began with undergraduate training at the University of Maryland at College Park, where she graduated with General Honors and Research Honors from her work at the NIH. Shortly after that, while in the Peace Corps in Belize, where she taught high school, she developed an interest in alternative medicines, chiropractic, acupuncture, and nutrition from her experiences there. She next attended the National University of Health Sciences near Chicago, IL, and graduated with a Doctorate in Chiropractic and initial acupuncture certification.
During her training at National, she developed an interest in using acupuncture and massage to enhance the effects of chiropractic adjustments. As an intern at the Salvation Army Clinics in Chicago, she expanded her knowledge of Chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, nutrition, exercise, and health counseling to help many people there.
After graduating from National, she, her husband, and their growing family moved to Durham, NC, in 1995. She opened her first practice in a renovated space at their first house in Durham and saw many patients. They moved to Chapel Hill to a more prominent location, still connected to their home, and Dr. Lisa, as her patients call her, expanded her practice. Recognizing the unique benefits of combining hands-on chiropractic care with acupuncture, she next attended the Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine. She achieved a Master’s Level certification in this healing art. In 2010, she became one of the few physicians fully licensed in chiropractic and acupuncture in NC. As her practice grew, she moved to her current office at Eastowne Hills in Chapel Hill, where she currently sees patients, assisted by two office staff.
