chiropractic treatment for headaches

Headache Doctor, Chapel Hill, NC

If you live in Chapel Hill, NC and are suffering from migraines, Dr. Lisa Oskardmay at Acupractic Natural Healing Center may be able to relieve your pain. Dr. Oskardmay has helped many patients with chiropractic treatment for headaches. As a respected and longtime headache doctor in Chapel Hill, NC, Dr. Oskardmay offers non-surgical treatment without the use of prescription medications. So-called ‘alternative medicine’ treatments such as chiropractic and acupuncture are now used by millions for natural lasting relief that harnesses your body’s healing response.

Nine out of ten people in the United States suffer from headaches on a regular basis. Though the form of the headache may vary—some experience infrequent pain while others suffer from them on a daily basis; people who experience the headache symptoms know how debilitating these symptoms can be. Dr. Oskardmay provides skilled chiropractic care in the form of gentle spinal mobilization and soft tissue massage. Acupuncture may also be applied to facilitate healing on many levels. Physical therapy modalities, exercise and dietary nutrition prescription may be added as needed. This is an effective technique for relieving the pain and tension associated with headaches, particularly those that originate from the patient’s neck.

Common Causes of Headaches

Causes of headaches are often referred to as “triggers.” What triggers a headache for one person, may not have the same effect on another. Some of the most common headache triggers include:

  • An environmental stimulus or circumstance such as noise, light, stress, blood sugar change, excessive exercise, insomnia, etc.
  • Misalignment of the spinal column or other area of the body.
  • Eye strain.
  • Sleeping, sitting or standing posture.
  • Muscle tension or joint irritation in the neck, back, or other area of the body.

How Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches Can Make a Difference

Chiropractors recognize the importance of proper neck posture and vertebral motion regarding headache treatment and prevention. The cervical spine is a series of seven bony vertebral units with eight cervical nerves emanating from them. The eight cervical nerves and associated ganglia are responsible for conducting nerve energy from the spinal cord to the head, neck, shoulders, diaphragm, lungs, heart, and other important areas such as the trachea and thyroid gland. Irritation of the nerves arising from the neck due to misalignment of the vertebrae, foraminal encroachment or even muscle tightness can affect the functioning of these important nerves creating stress and malfunction in the body.

A headache can be an indication that a subluxation exists that needs correction. Muscle tightness in the suboccipital region resulting from vertebral subluxation in the upper cervical region will produce tightness in that region and affect brain function. Muscle tightness in the sternocleidomastoid muscles on the sides of the neck will affect vertebral motion, nerve flow of nerves c3456, and can affect blood flow to the brain. Irritation to the lower cervical region at the transition between the cervical and thoracic spine levels will affect shoulder muscle tightness and arm function. Chiropractors recognize the need for proper cervical and thoracic spine motion and health and take steps to diagnose and treat problems in the neck that can contribute to headaches.

Many people today spend a lot of time with their heads bent forward because they use this position to type on computers and cell phones. This position of increased cervical lordosis has serious health implications and can cause headaches, in addition to other health concerns. The resultant neck pain indicates the presence of inflammation in the muscles and cervical vertebrae – a harbinger for future damage. Lingering inflammation at any joint will result in joint destruction and nerve impairment; in the neck it will also result in headaches. Your chiropractic physician will diagnose and treat the cervical subluxation before it interferes with your health in other ways, and will help improve posture with spinal adjustments and home exercises.

Dr.Oskardmay and her team at Acupractic Natural Healing Center offer a variety of effective chiropractic treatment for headaches that are specific to a patient’s condition. With more than two decades of experience as a headache doctor, she offers solutions that address a patient’s unique health concerns. After a thorough exam, Dr. Oskardmay may determine that one or more of the following treatments will be the optimum approach for a patient suffering from a primary headache:

  • Provide a chiropractic adjustment or spinal manipulation to alleviate stress on the patient’s system by improving spinal function.
  • Perform acupuncture therapy on one or more meridians or channels to harness the body’s natural healing potential
  • Provide diet and nutrition guidance with suggestions for improving the patient’s nutrition intake, overall diet, and the addition of specific vitamins and other non-prescription medication supplements.
  • Provide guidance for improving posture as well as relaxation techniques, specific exercises, and ergonomic approaches for daily routines (including sitting at a desk). Dr. Oskardmay uses ‘Posture Pro’ and other techniques to help you make the most of your sitting and standing postures to reduce neck pain and headaches.

A chiropractor can help reduce headache pain in many ways. They will also work with your medical doctor or other health practitioners to help you get the care you need.

Acupuncture for Knee Pain

Acupuncturist Chapel Hill, NC

Acupuncture can provide relief from knee pain on many levels and can be your first choice for healing from this painful condition. A licensed acupuncturist with over 25 years of clinical experience, Dr. Oskardmay uses acupuncture treatment to help patients suffering from knee pain and other conditions.

Acupuncture Meridian

Acupuncture meridian or channel theory recognizes that there are many possible causes and presentations of knee pain; examination by Dr. Oskardmay will ensure the diagnosis and treatment fit your unique needs. Following examination of the knee and connected parts, she will look at your tongue and take your pulses at both wrists to get a full picture and make an evaluation of which channels need help to restore your knee health. Channels, which have names such as: water, wood, earth, metal and fire, course the whole body like lines on a map. Used for centuries to diagnose and treat disease, channels can get blocked resulting in disease. Acupuncture works to unblock these channels, often with unparalleled success.

Diagnosing and Treating Knee Pain with Acupuncture

Dr. Oskardmay will pay attention to the words you use to describe your pain- does your knee ache? Is the pain sharp? Dull? Does it radiate? Where? Is the pain worse at certain times of day? What makes the pain better or worse? Does your knee or connected areas feel hot? Cold? Tingling? What emotions do you have regarding the knee pain- fear? Anger? Grief? Do any foods make the knee pain worse? Is there swelling around the knee or surrounding areas? Does the knee pain make you tired? Frustrated? All of these considerations reveal channel pathology that needs attention. Palpation and observation of the areas and channels will reveal more information that Dr. Oskardmay will compile into a diagnosis and treatment plan.

The knee is coursed by several channels: the water channel on the back, earth channel on the outside, wood channel on the inside. Blockage in any of these tendinomuscular channels due to an influx of cold, heat or injury can result in knee pain. Treatment to reduce blockage and restore healing energy (qi) movement through the channels is helpful to heal the knee as well as the connected leg, calf, hip, ankle, and foot. Acupuncture treatment at Acupractic Natural Healing Center and Acupuncture at Eastowne LLC, in Chapel Hill, NC will involve the insertion of acupuncture needles into acupoints along the channels to stimulate qi movement. Points near the painful knee, or on connected channels nearby or distant can be used depending on your unique presentation and comfort.

In addition to acupuncture needles insertion, Dr. Oskardmay might use additional therapies to promote healing and restore balance. These additional therapies might include gua sha (deep tissue channel massage), trigger point massage, cupping massage, application of hot and or cold with essential oils, and others. Also a licensed chiropractic physician, Dr. Oskardmay can provide chiropractic spinal care for knee pain, as well.

Acupuncture for knee pain will help you on many levels and help to keep knee pain from getting worse. Call our office today to schedule an appointment: 919-929-1400, or go online to schedule 24 hours a day: acudocnc.com.

Treatment of Stomach Pain and Bloating with Chiropractic Medicine

Chiropractor Chapel Hill, NC

During times of stress and hardship, many people experience abdominal irritation. As a chiropractic physician with over 25 years of experience, Dr.Oskardmay recognizes the vital role the stomach plays in health and the crucial connection between malaise and abdominal function. Whether hardship comes from physical pain such as back strain, headache or acid reflux, or mental suffering such as anxiety, depression, or loneliness, abdominal malfunction should not be ignored or coated with drugs that may have adverse side effects. At Acupractic Natural Healing Center, Dr. Oskardmay strives to help each person achieve health naturally. Read more to learn about treatment of stomach pain with chiropractic medicine.

The stomach is the central part of our body and is also the center of the transformation of nutrients. Bacteria in the gut break down nutrients and enzymes assist in the process. Our food choices play a large role in stomach function because each food can benefit or injure these components. Protein and nutrient-rich foods provide many vital building blocks for good health. Probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt and tempeh support gut diversity and assist stomach function. Foods rich in fiber, such as most fruits and vegetables, provide a haven for these beneficial bacteria. Medications such as antibiotics, while sometimes useful, have been shown to reduce healthy gut flora diversity and can create an inflammation-prone gut. Likewise, foods high in sugar, preservatives, trans fats, and other unhealthy substances can also create an unstable digestive system. Dr. Oskardmay will discuss these topics with patients because she recognizes the pivotal role the stomach has in healing and mind-body health.

Chiropractic Evaluation of Stomach Pain Aides in Determining Where Problems Exist

There are three distinct internal areas of stomach control: myogenic or muscle, hormonal, and neural control. Muscles, hormones, and nerves work together to move food through the digestive system, breakdown the food, and absorb or release it from the body. Symptoms such as constipation, bloating, diarrhea, stomachache, even malnutrition indicate problems in the stomach and connected digestive pathways that need attention. Chiropractic evaluation of the spine and nervous system can help determine where problems exist in the nervous system and muscles.

A licensed chiropractic physician, Dr. Oskardmay, can provide chiropractic adjustments to irritated spinal segments impacting nerves that affect the stomach and digestive system to aid in healing. Additionally, she can apply massage and acupuncture where needed to restore vitality and nerve and blood flow. Stagnation from impaired nerve or muscle function or lack of movement impairs energy flow. In combination with rejuvenating massage and meridian therapy, the chiropractic adjustment supports good qi flow.

A healthy body and mind depend on a healthy stomach and digestive system. This is a central tenet of Chinese Medicine, and Dr. Oskardmay provides guidance and treatment of stomach pain with chiropractic medicine to support the central core. Call (919) 929-1400, email schedule@acudocnc.com or visit our website acudocnc.com to schedule your healthy appointment today. At Acupractic Natural Healing Center and Acupuncture at Eastowne, LLC, in Chapel Hill, NC, acupuncture treatment is available to those who need it safely and effectively. Dr. Oskardmay has provided natural healing alternatives, including acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage to Triangle residents since 1995. These time-tested treatment methods support individual well being and enhance each person’s ability to heal naturally, without drug or surgical interventions. Chinese medicine emphasizes the innate healing potential in each person. Acupuncture treatment balances each body’s crucial yin and yang energetics, bringing relaxation and calming stress and anxiety naturally.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a meridian based healing method that relies on understanding the flow of healing energy in each person and how that energy gets stuck and where blockages to healing exist. Like nerve energy flow along nerves and blood flow in arteries and veins, qi energy flows in channels or meridians. Blocked energy flow manifests as mental confusion, organic disease, muscle trigger points, pain, or numbness. Acupuncturists like Dr. Oskardmay utilize small needles inserted along meridian acupoints to restore qi flow. The result is relaxed healing and reduced anxiety.

Anxiety afflicts many people in times of stress and can impair sleep, digestion, and mental clarity. Dr. Oskardmay begins each healing session with an examination to determine where energy stagnation and channel disruption exists to cause anxiety or other disorders. Acupuncture examination includes history taking, palpation of specific areas of pain or discomfort, pulse taking, and other aspects. Dr. Oskardmay creates a healing program unique to each patient with acupuncture point stimulation as the central component to balance qi flow along meridians and reduce stress and anxiety. She will incorporate massage techniques such as cupping, transverse friction massage, and percussive massage to reduce stagnation in irritated tissues and enhance healing blood flow to deprived areas.

As part of each treatment, Dr. Oskardmay educates each person regarding exercises and other ADL they can do on their own at home to improve their health naturally. The patient can review many of these activities on the office you-tube channel. Additionally, she will help patients understand the role of nutrition-related to body-mind health and make suggestions regarding local foods to incorporate to enhance well being and reduce anxiety.

Dr. Oskardmay understands that stress and anxiety are at an all-time high right now because of the pandemic. She is here for each person, whether they can come into the office or require telemedicine appointments. Acupuncture and Rumi and Healing

Acupuncturist Chapel Hill, NC

Chinese medicine acupuncture interprets the human experience poetically- health and disease reflect body energy that moves through us as a subjective experience. We can choose to guide the different aspects of this vital, non-dismissable lifeforce. As an acupuncturist Chapel Hill, NC trusts, Dr. Lisa Oskardmay helps patients make sense of ever-changing ebbs and qi flows as it passes through channels in and on our bodies. She uses acupuncture needles, massage, and other treatment methods to redirect flow where needed and reduce stagnation that impedes healing energy flow.

In Rumi’s poem ‘The Guest House,’ the author describes life inside each of us to reflect the energies of this world.

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.Meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.Because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

— Jellaludin Rumi,

Rumi’s description of the human being as a guest house shows the transient movement of energies that pass through daily, weekly, and annually, invigorating us throughout our lives. The poem’s author points out that, though momentary, each energy or `guest` adds value to our existence. Chinese medicine sees the human condition as full of energy that has value and a function. At our office, Dr. Oskardmay strives to improve and guide meridian transmission so that the body can learn and heal itself.

Energy is an interesting word- it has many manifestations. It is electricity and rushing water, and it is blood flow and nerve impulse transmission. It is happiness and sadness, terror and grief- and many other things. We are the embodiment of many aspects of this energy, which invigorates and motivates us. Our physical presence, our pain, and our emotional milieu all reflect the strength in us. We owe it to ourselves to pay attention to and respect the messages we receive from our physical pain, feelings, and intuitions. When we cover up the pain with pain pills or other addictions, we are not fully living. When we ignore our emotions and hide our feelings, we shirk the duty we have to ourselves and this world to experience and learn from this world.

At Acupractic Natural Healing Center, the chiropractic and acupuncture offices of Dr. Lisa Oskardmay in Chapel Hill, we use non-drug healing methods that restore the body’s ability to heal itself. We respect the healing potential you bring to your own experience.

Medical Doctor Referrals at Acupractic Natural Healing Center

Acupuncturist Chapel Hill, NC

At the chiropractic and acupuncture offices of Dr. Lisa Oskardmay, we appreciate referrals from many local medical doctors and the proximity of many fine medical establishments such as UNC Medical Center, Duke Medical Centers, and others. Many medical doctors understand that the chiropractic adjustment is safe when performed by licensed practitioners. Still, they appreciate the variety of techniques Dr. Oskardmay uses in her office to help people get well quickly and safely. Some medical doctors and patients alike may be concerned that some high-velocity chiropractic techniques would be unsafe or cause patients pain. Dr. Oskardmay utilizes both low velocity and high-velocity adjusting techniques depending on patient needs, so patients and referring physicians can rest assured she will provide safe, effective care to patients experiencing back or neck pain.

Many people over the age of 55 experience back pain and want to avoid drugs and surgery. At our office, Dr. Oskardmay provides hands-on and activator chiropractic spinal mobilization to reduce pain, restore pain-free range of motion, improve nerve flow, and postural integrity. The chiropractic adjustment is a very safe procedure. Patients who receive the treatment experience less pain and improved functionality in the short term and the long run. Patients interested in trying chiropractic can have confidence in their decision to use alternative medicine, which has none of the adverse side effects of traditional medical care such as drugs and surgery.

In fact, in the 2009 Journal of Manipulative and Physical Therapy, a peer-reviewed medical journal, an article entitled A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Two Types of Spinal Manipulation and Minimal Medical Conservative Care for Adults 55 and Older of Adults with Subacute or Chronic Low Back Pain discussed this topic. There are terrific benefits and safety from both high velocity and low-velocity adjustment procedures. Both techniques types performed at our office show marked improvement over other types of medical care for this population with back pain. Medical doctors want the best for their patients and appreciate the research-based conclusions that referral to our office benefits patients.

At Acupractic Natural Healing Center, we love taking care of our patients safely and effectively using low-risk chiropractic techniques. Chiropractic helps to reduce back and neck pain naturally. The research highlighted in this JMPT article proves the safety and effectiveness of our treatments that thousands have already experienced.

Epidural Steroid Injections Increase Risk of Vertebral Body Fracture

Chiropractor Chapel Hill, NC

Approximately 9 million epidural steroid injections are performed annually in this country for back pain and other conditions.  Steroid injections appear not to be as safe nor as beneficial as some believe, but many people are unaware of the risks associated with this type of injection. At the chiropractic and acupuncture offices of Dr. Lisa Oskardmay in Chapel Hill, NC, we strive to educate patients and potential patients regarding the risk-benefits of different care types while providing effective, safe, and gentle care.  This post summarizes an article in the peer-reviewed medical Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery to clarify some of the severe side effects of epidural steroid injections.

An epidural steroid injection is a technique in which a corticosteroid and a local anesthetic are injected into the epidural space around the spinal cord. The article mentioned above, entitled A Retrospective Analysis of Vertebral Body Fracture Following Epidural Steroid Injections, shows that these injections do not yield long term benefits for patients. Equally problematic, this type of medical treatment increases spine bone fracture risk substantially, as summarized in this medical journal article. The risk of vertebral body fracture increases markedly with each injection received and, since patients frequently get several of these injections over time, this raises many flags. Natural, hands-on chiropractic and acupuncture care may be a better option for many persons.

At Acupractic Natural Healing Center and Acupuncture at Eastowne LLC, Dr. Oskardmay uses low force chiropractic adjustments, thumper massage, and acupuncture with patients who have back pain with the risk of fracture. Spinal mobilization at the hands of a licensed chiropractic physician such as Dr. Lisa Oskardmay improves vertebral motion and function in several important ways. It restores range of motion between vertebrae, reduces adhesions between spinal bones, and removes nerve compression to restore influence to affected organs and muscles. Spinal mobilization also relaxes connected muscles to reduce muscle pain and improve balance while causing the release of endorphins which relax the body-mind naturally.

Dr. Oskardmay is aware that persons who have received steroid epidural injections will be at higher risk of fracture, so she helps patients with pain reduction techniques that promote overall body wellness and pain reduction. As a wellness educator since 1995, when she opened her first chiropractic and acupuncture wellness center in Durham, NC, she teaches patients how to achieve a healthy lifestyle with exercise education, relaxation technique promotion, and nutrition support.

At our new office location at 205 Providence Rd. in Chapel Hill, NC, we are close by and available to help patients looking to achieve a healthier lifestyle with less pain and better overall health and well being. If you or a loved one is considering getting an epidural steroid injection, make sure that you understand the procedure’s risks and benefits. If you choose to receive natural healing treatments, contact our office today to make an appointment with a chiropractor Chapel Hill, NC patients recommend that supports body-mind wellness and reduces pain naturally. Chiropractic Care Outperforms NSAID Use

Chiropractor Chapel Hill, NC

Back pain afflicts millions of people and is a significant cause of disability. Medications such as over the counter and prescribed NSAIDs do not provide as much benefit as previously assumed, and they have serious side-effects.  Importantly as well, nerves exiting the spine suffer impingement with many types of back pain, contributing to additional problems that NSAIDS do not correct. At the chiropractic and acupuncture offices of Dr. Lisa Oskardmay, we realize the need for effective back pain care because the spine affects so much of our health. A former researcher herself at the NIH, Dr. Oskardmay, understands the benefits of high-quality medical research and uses this to provide better care for patients every day.

Patients seeking relief from back pain look to their medical providers for assistance, and those providers rely on research to guide their decisions. When providers review high-quality news outlets such as Spine journal for information, they will find that the chiropractic adjustment provides safe and practical benefits for patients and feel comfortable referring patients for chiropractic care for back pain and other disorders.

A Spine article published in April of 2013 is called ‘Spinal High-Velocity Low Amplitude Manipulation in Acute Nonspecific Low Back Pain Versus Commonly Prescribed Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs.’ This study is of high value because it was randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled. The study reviewed several NSAIDs, such as Diclofenac, one of the most commonly prescribed NSAIDs for back pain- the first line of defense against back pain in many medical offices. Other standard tools include rest, PT, and surgery and, increasingly, chiropractic referral.

Researchers found that the chiropractic adjustment provides superior symptom relief when compared to placebo and when compared to NSAID use. Results were clinically significant and should provide patients and referring providers another avenue to back pain care besides NSAIDs, which don’t work as well and which have substantial adverse side effects. At Acupractic Natural Healing Center and Acupuncture at Eastowne, Dr. Oskardmay has provided quality care since 1995. She appreciates referrals from other local healthcare providers for situations of back pain and other conditions.

This research and other studies demonstrate the benefits of the hands-on chiropractic adjustment that many people have already discovered. The first research article related to chiropractic of this type is published in Spine journal, surprising perhaps since chiropractic is used by many patients worldwide. Nonetheless, medical research into the benefits of chiropractic is growing, and we look forward to additional research in the future.

Paddleboarding in the Carolinas Safely for Health’s Sake

Chiropractor Chapel Hill, NC

Paddleboarding started as a new exercise in Hawaii in the 1940s when a surfer grew tired of all the sitting and standing involved with regular surfing. Nowadays, many people perform this activity every day on lakes, pools, deep rivers, even out in the ocean beyond the breaking waves. It is a great way to spend time outside, work the upper and lower body muscles, and the muscles involved with overall body balance. If you are interested in this sport, talk with Dr. Oskardmay about some essential considerations.

Paddleboarding in the Carolinas Safely for Health's Sake

Have Dr. Oskardmay do a spinal evaluation before you go out for your first time to correct any misalignments that could affect balance, strength, and back pain. She may provide some exercises to strengthen weak body areas in preparation, besides, to make your experience safer and more enjoyable. Vertebrae in the neck surround nerves going to the shoulders, arms, and hands; spinal subluxation in the cervical spine can affect upper body strength and also the ability to balance and turn the neck comfortably. Spinal nerves from the lower back lumbar spine travel to the hips, legs, and feet, all crucial areas for paddleboarding and balance. Performed with a flat, buoyant paddle boat made of resin, paddleboarders balance atop the paddle boat and move through the water using one free-standing long-handed oar. The activity requires good balance- even getting onto the paddleboard can be a challenge! Paddleboarders stand in one spot with legs slightly bent for the duration of the event (unless they jump in the water or sit down); this requires adequate leg strength and stamina. Also, the arms get quite a workout from rowing, and boarders need to be able to row using both arms to maneuver the paddle boat. After a fall or jump in the water, getting back on the board requires some strength and flexibility.

Be sure to wear a lifejacket and water shoes or the like while paddleboarding. For your first visit, consider going through a company such as Express Watersports in Murrells Inlet, SC, that provides paddleboard experiences for first-time boarders on the inlet. They supply all necessary gear and the board and give a short, but adequate lesson in how to paddleboard. They even take a photo of you at the beginning that you can get at the end. The author and her husband used this company’s services on their last visit to the Myrtle Beach area and enjoyed the staff’s experience and helpfulness in all areas. The experience can be as short as two hours, which is about right for most beginning paddleboarders.

Paddleboarding in the Carolinas Safely for Health's Sake 2

There are options for more experienced paddleboarders who need to rent equipment, as well. Uwharrie Hoof and Paddle near Uwharrie National Forest in Troy, NC is a family-owned facility that rents paddleboards and life-preservers for full-day (9 am-4 pm)  self-guided tours of Badin Lake in the National Forest. There is ample opportunity to get off the board and swim to cool off and relax on the shore. The company also delivers and picks-up the equipment, very helpful because a paddleboard is quite substantial.

Paddleboarding in the Carolinas Safely for Health's Sake 3Paddleboarding provides a superb opportunity to spend time in nature while exercising safely and with social-distancing. Of particular interest to the author is that opportunity to gently and quietly approach parts of life usually only seen in a book or through binoculars. The biggest challenge is learning how to deal with `wakes` created by the wind or other boaters; with a little experience, however, paddleboarding can be a high summer activity. Ask Dr. Oskardmay about how you can add the water activity to your summertime plans.
