How Does Acupuncture Feel?
Acupuncturist Chapel Hill, NC
Acupuncture feels different for each person, depending on their sensitivity and their acupuncturist’s technique. The goal of acupuncture treatment is to reduce discomfort in the body and mind and support the flow of natural healing energy, qi. Sometimes patients have strong sensations at points; sometimes they have little to no sensation. The amount of sensation a patient has to acupuncture doesn’t determine the outcome. Factors that influence the amount and type of sensation a patient experiences include the location of the point, depth of needle insertion, stimulation of the needle during insertion, use of electrostimulation or other products on the needle, and skin quality or texture.
We generally avoid needle insertion into areas of open sores or wounds, swelling, or bruising, although selecting a nearby point is an option to stimulate the flow of healing qi to injured areas. Additional factors include the thickness of the skin in certain areas and whether the needle contacts a nerve, which is not ideal. Work with a licensed practitioner to avoid unnecessary discomfort during treatment. During treatment, it is imperative that patients relax, breathe deeply, and avoid unnecessary movement. Many patients turn off their cell phones and subdue other notifications that may disturb them. Extraneous movements can dislodge or move needles, risking injury.
Patients report a sensation during needle insertion at the acupuncture point as somewhat dull and achy at times, possibly a quick sharpness that persists. When a patient tells us about an acupuncture treatment in which they experienced great discomfort or pain, it almost always turns out that they received treatment by a nonacupuncturist, such as a person doing DNT (dry needling) or another nonlicensed practitioner. To be successful, acupuncture need not hurt.
Acupuncture points may be tight and stretched, soft and pliable, knotted and taut, or soft sometimes. Patients are instructed to rest during treatment at our office. A call button placed nearby is available to alert Dr. Oskardmay of any discomfort or patient needs during treatment. Occasionally, patients do press the button, and needle repositioning resolves any discomfort. At treatment end, usually about 20”, Dr. Oskardmay removes the acupuncture needles. Though rarely a source of discomfort, there may be a little bit of blood at the point of needle removal, especially in regions of high circulation, such as the ears and hands or feet. We instruct patients to rest for a few minutes before exiting the table and, ideally, to maintain a relaxed attitude for a few hours after treatment.
