Acupuncturist Chapel Hill, NC

Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of tiny sterile needles into acupuncture points, called acupoints, anatomically defined areas on the skin known to stimulate the central nervous system upon needle insertion. Stimulation of the acupoint releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain to correct imbalances or blockages in the flow of energy or qi throughout the body. A licensed acupuncturist like Dr. Lisa Oskardmay can treat different health conditions by stimulating these acupuncture points using small needle insertion, electrostimulation, or massage.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Theory, acupoints relate to sensations, organs, and emotions. Acupoints exist in lines of energy called meridians or channels, each associated with a particular element: wood, fire, earth, metal, water, ren (aka conception vessel), and du (aka governing vessel). TCM Acupuncture is a highly logical system of healing based on thousands of years of clinical experience with millions of individuals; your licensed acupuncturist chooses acupoints best suited for each treatment based on individual presentation and need.

Acupuncture treatment is highly individualized, and patients appreciate the holistic approach of acupuncture treatment, which allows for various conditions. The World Health Organization states defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity; it lists acupuncture as an effective treatment for over 100 common health concerns ranging from headache to low back pain, depression to shoulder tendonitis, to name a few. Acupuncture point selection and treatment in the hands of a skilled, caring, Licensed Acupuncturist sets the stage for healing on many levels for people of all ages.

Three hundred sixty-one standardized acupuncture points exist on the surface of the human body along the 14 main meridians or energy channels. Linking internal organs to each other and the external world, meridians carry life force throughout the body. Using acupuncture points, your Lac will help to resolve blockage to qi flow along these meridians, organs, and other tissues. Some commonly used acupoints exist in regions of muscle tension, palpable as a region of muscle tension; others exist along the spine and paraspinal regions near nerve outflow from the spine, others referred to as antique shu points are on the hands and feet, still others on the ear called auriculotherapy points, other on the scalp and neck region. Your acupuncturist evaluates each patient each visit before carefully selecting which point to use that day.

Dr. Oskardmay performs massage at our office before acupuncture treatment, and cupping therapy is also an option. The patient rests on the comfortable anti-gravity table for treatment and uses approximately ten points each visit. Patients relax for 15-20 minutes with optional heat and optional electrostimulation. Following needle removal, patients arise refreshed and ready to engage in the rest of their day. After treatment, suggestions include refraining from intense activities such as heavy exercise or eating for a few hours post-treatment.
