Chiropractic and Acupuncture for Hip Pain

Chiropractor and Acupuncturist Chapel Hill, NC

Hip and groin pain is a major source of discomfort for many people. While older individuals frequently suffer from this problem, younger patients also present with hip discomfort, though for different reasons. At Acupractic Natural Healing Center, the chiropractic and acupuncture offices of Dr. Lisa Oskardmay in Chapel Hill, we strive to understand the cause of hip pain to treat it effectively and permanently.

Before treating hip pain, Dr. Oskardmay examines the patient with history and palpation and determines if there are any ‘red flags’ such as unexplained weight loss, bleeding, pain at rest, or traumatic events that warrant more in-depth evaluation. A good history also takes into consideration the patient’s family history, and history of lifestyles- sports, work, accidents, other chronic and acute medical issues such as osteoporosis and diabetes. Activities that involve kicking and/or quick changes of direction can cause hip pain. Additionally, the doctor determines if the hip pain stems from a referred source, such as abdominal concerns or spinal referral. If the hip pain is mechanical, she evaluates posture and range of motion, then palpates the hip regions and performs orthopedic tests to pinpoint the muscles, ligaments, and bony structures involved.

Mechanical hip pain frequently originates from one of several areas- the femoral acetabular region (Ie, where the large femoral bone top area joins the pelvic bone), the pubic symphysis area (the middle lower area of the hip), and the anterior hip (pelvic dish area). While palpation of some sensitive hip areas may be uncomfortable, other signs may indicate the cause of hip pain. For instance, if it hurts to squeeze the knees together (hip adduction), this may indicate a problem in the pubic symphysis region and inner thighs. If the patient has trouble lifting the thigh (hip flexion), this may indicate a problem in the pelvis dish area (psoas or quadriceps muscles), and if the patient suffers from overall hip weakness and instability, this can indicate a condition called femoral acetabular impingement (ball and socket region of the hip). Additionally, tears in the hip socket (labral tears) can occur.

Using gentle Activator adjusting maneuvers to support nerve flow to the hip, Dr. Oskardmay helps patients with hip pain activate a healing response. Additionally, through acupuncture and massage applied to trigger points and knots, she improves qi circulation, blood flow, and balance in patients with hip pain. The doctor advises patients on lifestyle adaptations, including sitting, walking, and sleep postures; nutrition to support the healing response; and when to seek additional help.
